Prior to speaking with him, I had spoken with another company that quoted me an astronomical price for my sprinkler repair without even coming out to see the problem first. I then spoke with Martin. Erosion is the result of natural forces acting on the earth. The two principal natural forces that are most common in our area are water and gravity.
These two may be dealt with effectively to minimize the natural process by controlling the water (drainage) and the gravity such as via slope control (retaining wall/ terrace) or a combination thereof. Cost effective solutions to prevent soil loss must be tailored to each site. It may be as simple as a drain and sod or a retaining wall where a division or decrease in slope grade is required. A simple, cost effective and diverse modality is found in the gabion wall (heavy wire baskets filled with rock) These are a cost effective alternative to traditional retaining walls (stone/ cross tie) but very effective at breaking the kinetic energy of water and offering a permeable barrier to the water while “catching” the soil (erosion control). Eventually they blend in the surroundings and are a decorative accoutrement that can last for many years.
Gabion Walls ( literally “basket of rocks”) offer a cost effective solution to erosion and site stabilization such as in creek banks. The Gabions ability to effectively handle water and the resulting forces make the structure a perfect option for creek bank stabilization and erosion issues found in terrain with a steep slope used as a terracing device.
